GT40 Intake: Elbow Adapter Woes

Updated: Jan 12, 2020

Today, I invested in my GT40 intake. Besides buying the wrong intake gasket (w/ provisions for EGR), I bought an Edelbrock intake elbow adapter. I had seen many other SN95 owners mate this part to their GT4O intakes, and thought it would be an easy bolt-on.

I was wrong, sort of.

Very quickly, the provided instructions proved to be confusing and ultimately irrelevant. This product was designed to fit to an Edelbrock intake and the instructions reflected that.

Mounting it was difficult - it required studs be inserted into the manifold. And with some encouragement, they were in no problem. What was a problem was sliding the elbow on. Of the four mounting holes, one was threaded and couldn't fit the stud. From what I gathered from the instructions, this provision was designed to get a bolt in from behind - something that couldn't be done on the GT40 intake. To solve this, I drilled out the threads and bored the hole to match that of the other three. I slowly scaled up drill bits as any complications could result in dragging a power drill against the beautiful flat mounting surface of the elbow or chewing the whole thing up into an oblivion.

Now that it could be mounted, it needed to stay mounted. Installing the supplied washers and nuts wasn't easy - there was a delicate procedure needed to do so. Remember the problematic mounting hole? Well there's little to no clearance for a nut and washer on that stud - probably why the bolt was designed to be installed from the back. To fit it, I had to hover the elbow at the end of the studs, stuff the nut and washer in what little space was provided and turn by hand, praying to whoever's up there that I could catch a thread. Thankfully, I did.

And no, I didn't forget the gasket. On that note however, it too seems designed for an Edelbrock intake, and has odd ends and bits poking out here and there. For me, it was enough of a gasket to be used as a gasket, and will stay there until I have some horrible leak in the near future.

Now that it's installed and looking pretty, I'll attempt to install the intake (and its new elbow) into the disgUSTANG - eventually. Stay tuned for inevitable complications with the EGR and throttle body!
